Nigerian Police Withdraw Security from Rivers Local Government Elections

 

 

The Nigerian Police Force has refused security for the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State. This decision follows a restraining order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which bars security agencies from participating in the elections scheduled for tomorrow.

 

 

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, emphasized that the police must adhere to the court’s ruling. The Force Legal Department advised the police to comply with the order, which prohibits their involvement in securing the elections. “The rule of law binds us and must respect the court’s decision,” Iringe-Koko stated.

 

 

The court issued the restraining order on July 19, 2024, and reaffirmed it on September 30, 2024. As a result, the police remain committed to upholding the law, ensuring that their actions align with the court’s directive.

 

 

Moreover, opposition parties recently protested, demanding full compliance with the court’s decision. They raised concerns that ignoring the order could compromise the election’s integrity. In response, the police encouraged aggrieved parties to seek legal redress through the appropriate channels. This, they emphasized, would maintain the rule of law and prevent unnecessary disruptions.

 

 

Additionally, Iringe-Koko reassured the public, stating, “The Nigeria Police Force remains focused on maintaining peace and will act swiftly against any threats to public order.” She added that all police officers, including Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers, have been instructed to enforce the court’s judgment without exception.

 

 

Without police involvement, many citizens worry about the safety of the elections. The absence of security forces, particularly during a tense political period, could increase tensions in Rivers State. However, the police assured citizens that they would respond to any disturbances, provided their actions remained within the court’s ruling.

 

 

As the election approaches, stakeholders are urged to stay calm, follow legal procedures, and ensure that the election process remains peaceful and lawful. This would ultimately safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and promote stability in Rivers State.
