October 1 Protest: Organizers Seek Security, Demand an End to Anti-Poor Policies
Global News reports that The organizers of the upcoming October 1st nationwide protest have reached out to the Nigerian Police. They are asking for security during the protest. This event, known as the “National Day of Survival,” is a response to the government’s “anti-poor policies,” according to the group.
In a joint statement, civil rights groups like the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) stressed the importance of a peaceful protest. Hassan Soweto, the ERC national coordinator, urged Nigerians to peacefully speak out against the economic challenges they face.
Why the Protest is Happening
The protest comes after the government ignored demands from earlier protests in August. The groups are upset with the rising cost of living, especially fuel prices, which have skyrocketed. They also blame President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for using public money for personal luxuries while Nigerians suffer.
One of the organizers stated, “We ask Nigerians to join us in fighting against the anti-poor policies of this government.” The rising cost of fuel, now between ₦900 and ₦1,900 per liter, has made life even harder for many. Food prices and inflation are also increasing, making it difficult for workers to survive on the current minimum wage of ₦70,000.
At the same time, businesses are struggling. Many multinational companies have left the country due to high costs, leading to more job losses.
Request for Police Protection
The protest is set to begin at Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos at 7:30 AM. The organizers have formally asked the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, to provide protection. They reminded the police of their duty under the Police Establishment Act 2020 to ensure the safety of all citizens during public demonstrations.
“We have informed the police of our protest and their duty to protect us,” the statement reads.
Call for Justice
The protest is not only about economic issues. The organizers are also demanding the release of #EndSARS and #EndBadGovernance protesters still held in custody. They want detained journalists, activists, and whistleblowers to be freed as well.
The organizers hope the protest will push the government to act. They warned that more protests will follow if the demands are not met.
